Is decentralisation safer or not?

As you probably know by now, we’re all about decentralisation. There are so many benefits to moving away from centralised systems that we aren’t even going to try and list them out here.

Rather, we’re going to focus on one of the primary barriers to the accessibility of decentralised clouds: the perception that somehow they are less safe.

It’s simply not true.

Allow us to explain. 2017 brought significant adoption of the blockchain with it, and the mainstream media wasn’t quite sure how to portray it; is crypto and the underlying technology evil, revolutionary or both?

We firmly believe not only that blockchain will change the world for the better, but that we will be along for the journey. That’s why we’re committed to education. ABE — always be educating.

Centralised vs decentralised cloud storage: fight!

Centralised clouds from all the major providers (Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Citrix etc) work in the same way: they take a copy your data and put it on their servers. This means you and your data are beholden to their policies, security, vulnerability, cost structures and more.

Decentralised clouds are trustless, minimise costs and do not share the same single point of failure — a data breach is going to be much more damaging to a centralised cloud than a decentralised cloud because it can gain full access.

Studies from analysts IDC suggest that in the next 25 years, nearly half of all data will be accessed via servers at the edge of networks rather than in the centre of it.

This suggests that centralised clouds are only winning out in terms of popularity, and their days may be numbered, they are not safer than their decentralised cousins.

Winner: it’s a tie for now.

But we’re not finished yet, no no.

Other benefits of decentralised clouds:

In no particular order:

  • Data sitting in decentralised clouds can benefit from local firewall and geodemographic protection
  • Far more cost-efficient
  • Supports more agile development
  • Data is not duplicated making storage and compliance easier
  • Benefits from blockchain’s compartmentalisation
  • Remains true to the ideals of blockchain and cryptocurrency, boosting the credibility, authenticity & genuineness of the organisation using it

What do you think? Is it clear to you that decentralised clouds are the future? Let us know in the comments!
